PhD / Doctorate
Definition
The doctorate is the highest academic degree and qualifies for independent scientific research. After a Master's degree, a doctoral thesis (dissertation) is written over 3-5 years. The doctoral title (Dr. or PhD) is a prerequisite for an academic career and in some industries also for leadership positions.
Example: "After the Master's she decided on a doctorate in organisational research."
