    Who is the right recommender?

    MBA programs typically require 2 recommendations, ideally from the current or former direct supervisor. Important: not the highest-ranking name but the one who knows your work best. Academic recommendations are expected only for full-time MBAs without sufficient work experience. Recommendations from family, friends or clients are not counted.

    Can I draft my own recommendation letter?+

    Some supervisors ask. It is an ethical risk: if AdComs notice similar language across recommendations, the application can be disqualified. Better to provide a detailed briefing with bullet points – the final text must be written by the recommender.

    What to do if my boss must not know about the MBA?+

    Common situation. Solutions: (1) former supervisor from a previous role, (2) mentor/client with longer collaboration, (3) ask the school for an exception (confidentiality statement). INSEAD, IMD and LBS explicitly accept alternative recommenders for sensitive cases.

    In what language should the recommendation be written?+

    In the program language. For English-taught MBAs in English, for German-language programs (Danube University Krems, some part-time) in German. Translations require certified versions. English-language recommendations are universally accepted.

    500–800 words / 1–1.5 pages. Schools with structured forms (e.g. INSEAD, GMAC Common LOR) provide fields with word limits. Free-form letters should not exceed 1 page – quality beats length.

    Are recommendations from freelancers or founders evaluated differently?+

    Yes. Founders should submit recommendations from investors, board members, co-founders or long-term major clients. Schools understand the special situation and accept mentors as long as a substantial working relationship exists (at least 1 year).
