    The MBA has been a full academic master's degree in DACH since the Bologna reform (1999), provided the program is accredited (FIBAA/AACSB/EQUIS/AMBA). Correct format: "Anna Müller, MBA" – after the name. Entry in the German passport no longer possible (since 2007), still possible in Austria. Foreign MBAs need a ZAB assessment (KMK) for official use. Unauthorized use is a criminal offense (§132a StGB).

    May I use "Master" in my name after the MBA?

    Yes – in Germany, Austria and Switzerland the MBA has been a full academic master's degree since the Bologna reform (1999/2002), provided the program is accredited (FIBAA, AACSB, EQUIS or AMBA). You may use the title "MBA" or "Master of Business Administration" after your name (e.g. "Anna Müller, MBA"). Placing it before the name ("MBA Anna Müller") is unusual and incorrect.

    Recognition in Germany, Austria and Switzerland

    • Germany: Recognized by KMK 2003 as "M.B.A." or "MBA", accredited by FIBAA/AACSB/EQUIS/AMBA

    Common mistakes when using the MBA title

    • Adding "MBA" to the ID card – not possible (no state degree)
    • Using "Master MBA" – redundant, MBA already contains "Master"
    • "Dr. MBA" – PhD AND MBA together: "Dr. Anna Müller, MBA" (correct)
    • Listing MBA from a non-accredited program like a master's degree – risk of unfair competition
    • Using English "Master of Business Administration" and German "M.B.A." in parallel – one suffices

    Is a foreign MBA valid in Germany?+

    If the foreign institution is state or internationally accredited (AACSB, EQUIS, AMBA) and the MBA builds on a university degree, use is allowed in Germany. To be safe: request a ZAB assessment (KMK central office for foreign education). Specific recognition is not mandatory but helps with authorities and employers.

    How do I correctly use the title on a business card?+

    "Anna Müller, MBA" or "Anna Müller, M.B.A." after the name. Multiple titles: "Dr. Anna Müller, MBA". The addition "(Mannheim Business School)" is optional and common for prestigious programs. With multiple MBAs (rare): list only the highest or most specialized.

    Can I have the MBA added to my passport?+

    Germany: no, academic degrees have not been entered into passports since 2007. Austria: yes, can be entered if registered with the ministry. Switzerland: not provided for.

    How does the MBA differ from "akademisch geprüfter Betriebswirt"?+

    The MBA is an internationally recognized academic master's degree (300 ECTS building on a bachelor's). "Akademisch geprüfter Betriebswirt" is a VWA/IWW continuing education without state-recognized degree – must not be called master. Differences: recognition, depth, practical international modules.

    May I use "MBA" if I only completed individual modules?+

    No. The title may only be used after fully completing the accredited program (incl. master thesis, 60–120 ECTS depending on program). Unauthorized use is a criminal offense in Germany under §132a StGB.
