    TOEFL iBT (€245) and IELTS Academic (€235) are essentially equivalent for MBA applications. Top schools require TOEFL 95–105 / IELTS 6.5–7.5. Both are valid 2 years and can be taken online from home. Waiver possible with English-taught Bachelor or 2+ years of work in English. Duolingo English Test (€40) is increasingly but not universally accepted.

    TOEFL or IELTS: Which test for the MBA?

    Both tests are essentially equivalent for MBA admissions in DACH and globally. TOEFL iBT is American-style (multiple choice, computer-based), IELTS Academic more British (face-to-face Speaking interview). Choose based on your language style and target schools. Test-optional is common for DACH programs with German-language components.

    Is the Duolingo English Test accepted for MBA applications?+

    Increasingly yes. ESMT Berlin, HHL and some top international schools (Yale SOM, Tuck) accept the DET (€40 instead of €245). Mannheim Business School, IMD and INSEAD still require TOEFL or IELTS. Check with the admissions office.

    When can I apply for a TOEFL/IELTS waiver?+

    When (1) your Bachelor/Master was fully taught in English, (2) you worked 2–3 years in an English-speaking country, or (3) English was provably your work language. Written confirmation from employer or university required.

    How long does TOEFL/IELTS prep take?+

    4–8 weeks at C1 level, 3–4 months at B2. Daily English immersion (podcasts, Netflix without subtitles, language partners) helps more than pure test cramming. Official practice tests (TOEFL Practice Online, IELTS Official Practice Materials) are mandatory.

    Which test is easier: TOEFL or IELTS?+

    Subjective. Those preferring British English and personal conversation do better with IELTS. Those liking multiple choice and fast computer work pick TOEFL. We recommend a free diagnostic test (e.g. Magoosh) before deciding.

    Can I take TOEFL/IELTS online from home?+

    Yes, both offer home/online versions with identical recognition. Requirements: separate room, no external monitor, webcam, stable internet (10+ Mbps). Free retake available on technical issues.
