Glass Ceiling

Definition

The Glass Ceiling describes invisible, structural career barriers that prevent women and minorities from advancing to top leadership. In top management of large listed companies, the share of women is still around 20%. Causes include male-dominated networks, lack of role models, unconscious bias and non-transparent promotion processes. Business schools actively counter the glass ceiling with leadership programs, sponsorship and diverse faculty.

Example: "Despite excellent reviews she hit the glass ceiling just below board level."
