How to study abroad during Corona times

The Covid-19 pandemic continues to hold the world in its grip. The numerous travel restrictions, many closed universities and the most diverse contact bans also affect the continuing education plans of German students.

If you want to complete a full master's degree program abroad, it currently makes more sense to start your studies online for the time being. You can then continue or complete your studies on site at a later date, so as to lose little (or no) time. At some study locations, it is already possible to pursue an online degree on site and thus at least partially gain an international experience.

Whether anything changes in the course of study, the study content or the fees depends individually on the respective university and your desired course of study and should be checked individually. Online study also offers an opportunity for all those who want to advance their academic education from their familiar surroundings (note time difference!).

Whether it is worthwhile to plan a study abroad from summer/autumn 2021 depends on when the study starts abroad and in which country you want to study. Below you will find examples of a few countries and information on the semester abroad there.

    Australia & New Zealand

An application for July 2021 in e.g. Australia and New Zealand should only be started / submitted if you are able to 1) complete the study online or 2) postpone it to a later date (autumn 2021 for universities with Trimester 3 or even better: February or July 2022).* Because: Currently the borders are closed and there are no indications of an early opening for students studying abroad. Some universities have a Trimester 3, which starts in October / November, and which may have better prospects for realization. However, the universities and authorities have not yet decided anything on this.

In the USA, Canada, Great Britain and the EU, the semester usually starts in August or September (Fall 2021). Here we currently assume that the Fall Semester will take place on site! Nevertheless, it is also worthwhile here to consider a plan B (alternative online study or option to postpone the semester to 2022), should the semester be cancelled or entry not be possible.*
