What Matters More Than MBA Rankings?

Most prospective applicants who engage the Stacy Blackman Consulting team as their admissions consulting partner are focused on top business school brands. They view the MBA as a long-term investment in themselves and their future and know that a degree from an elite business school carries a lot of cachet. Some applicants are so swayed by MBA rankings that they will only consider M7 schools, which is why their admit rates are the highest.

The “magnificent seven” (M7) business schools in the US include: Harvard Business School, Stanford Graduate School of Business, Wharton School, Chicago Booth School of Business, Kellogg School of Management, MIT Sloan School of Management, Columbia Business School

Still, we advise our clients against focusing too much on MBA rankings when deciding where to apply. Our team believes the most underrated influencing factor in defining a top program is recruiting. Often, applicants don’t consider how much an MBA impacts their career path and future employer. It also has a big impact on where they might live in the future and even their post-MBA salary.

In episodes 90 and 91 of Stacy Blackman Consulting’s B-Schooled podcast, host Erika explored whether MBA rankings matter when choosing schools. In certain cases, the answer can be yes. For example, applicants who want to enter a top investment bank or an “MBB” management consulting firm should know that these firms will likely only recruit from the top 15 schools.

You can see who recruits at each business school by looking at their online job postings. If the companies you are interested in are not on the list, it will be difficult to get your foot in the door to get a job there after graduation.

“Students who were not in those top programs would have to rely much more heavily on their network to get interviews at those types of firms if they wanted to land there,” Erika explains.
