MBA Studies in Germany
The Master of Business Administration (MBA) remains one of the most popular master's degrees. It is taught and recognized worldwide as a completely independent master's degree. Furthermore, this course of study is known for its intensive combination of practical experience and theoretical knowledge.
In Germany, there are many different ways to obtain an MBA degree. Those who complete the full-time program should expect to spend between 12 and 24 months. The duration depends on the program, the federal state, and the respective business school or university. Of course, one can also complete an MBA as a part-time program. This allows one to continue working for their current employer and pursue their studies in the evenings and on weekends. Since the study period is thus spread over a longer period, this type of study usually takes longer.
For those who want to continue working and still further their education, there is another option to complete an MBA program, called the Executive MBA. In this model, prospective students reach an agreement with their employer and are usually financed by them. The Executive MBA program is specifically aimed at executive managers, and the study is based on a very tight curriculum.
Another alternative is distance learning or online study, where one primarily continues their education at home and participates in online seminars – a great advantage during the current Covid-19 pandemic. The necessary documents and study materials for this study variant are also received online, and thus it depends on one's own discipline how quickly one progresses with the studies. An additional advantage is that one can organize their study time very flexibly.
The admission requirements for an MBA program are similar to those required for normal master's degrees. It is definitely necessary to have a bachelor's degree or another specialized diploma. In some cases, it is possible to replace this requirement with (usually several years of) professional experience. A difference from a normal master's program is that the MBA is predominantly offered at a business school rather than a university. However, there are now many universities that also offer and teach MBA programs.
Looking at the motivation of those who want to complete an MBA program, there is little difference from those who plan to study a normal master's program. All students share the goal of individual further education in specialist areas important to them. Additionally, they naturally want to do something for their personal career and deepen their professional know-how. In most cases, MBA as well as master's studies are started after gaining professional experience. The MBA is recommended in many management networks, but – one must be honest – it is already quite widespread, which is why a timely career jump into a management position is not always associated with successful completion. Precisely for this reason, it is necessary to use the knowledge and skills acquired during the MBA or master's studies as positively and intensively as possible.
