MBA Degree: The Right Choice for Your Career?
Anyone considering further education should carefully consider what an MBA or Master's degree means for their personal career. In the following article, you will learn what career professionals have to say about it.
Delve into the deeper meaning of an MBA program
"The best way to decide if you really need an advanced degree is to start at the end and work backward," says Steve Langerud, a workplace consultant and managing partner at Steve Langerud & Associates, LLC . He believes that you should ask yourself whether you need an advanced degree based on a course of study, or whether this further training truly benefits your career, or if the desired MBA degree primarily promotes your personal development. Both variants are legitimate reasons; they are just different.
"A degree opens up many opportunities, but it is also an investment that should be carefully considered. Unlike a bachelor's degree, advanced degrees often aim to secure a job or to further develop within it," says Steve Langerud. "If you tell yourself, 'I can't reach the next career level without this degree,' then you are a good candidate for further education." But this can be expensive – not only financially, but also physically and emotionally. One of the most common mistakes professionals make is thinking they need an advanced degree when they could achieve the same goal with more training, experience, or certifications.
Ask yourself the right questions
To determine whether the future career path requires an MBA or another advanced degree, Steve Langerud advises his clients to look at areas of work they find interesting, attractive, and desirable. Contact professionals who are currently successful in the position you aspire to and speak with them personally. Have the people in these positions completed further training? What kind of degrees and certifications do they have? Where did they earn their degrees? The answers to all these questions will show you how optimal a degree would be for your own career and what output you would get for your investment.
Michael Provitera, author of the book Mastering Self-Motivation , adds further questions such as: Will my company pay me better after my further training? What would be the best degree for me in my situation? Michael Provitera advises clarifying these questions with a career specialist or asking for advice from people working in the same industry or field.
