Ready for an MBA? How much experience you need to study for an MBA.
Many students pursuing postgraduate studies wonder whether they should immediately pursue an MBA or wait until they have more work experience. Because anyone considering such thoughts naturally also considers how much experience will be necessary to be admitted to the MBA program of their individual choice. The answer largely depends on personal qualifications – but the underlying concept is relatively simple.
The criteria that most MBA programs present to their applicants can be summarized in the following two basic statements. You should definitely be able to confidently say to yourself:
I have a solid and demonstrable level of leadership experience.
I have a compelling reason to apply for an MBA right now (for example, due to career plans that require an MBA).
If you believe that these two reasons apply to you and are sufficiently justified, then you already have a good chance of being admitted to an MBA program. Nevertheless, there are many other factors, but at least a positive answer to the statements mentioned above is a good basis for your MBA study plans.
The big plus of work experience
Many MBA programs may require a few years of work experience. As far as admission statistics are concerned, they do. Elite schools, in particular, are known for requiring several years of work experience – usually even 1 or 2 years more than other business schools. The world-renowned Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, for example, requires students to have an average of five years of work experience, while for an MBA at Harvard Business School, they generally need to have four years of work experience. At most business schools, the requirement is 3 years, which corresponds to the general standard, and in addition to work experience, leadership experience must also be demonstrated.
