First EU4Dual Master's Degree Program Launched

FH Joanneum and partners are launching the first transnational dual Master's degree program in Europe with EU4Dual. The pilot project integrates theory and practice across borders at multiple locations. The goal is to train international specialists within the framework of the European Education Area.

    First EU4Dual Master's Program Launched

Graz/Europe, October 15, 2026 – With the official start of the semester in autumn 2026, the first transnational Master's program of the European Dual Studies University (EU4Dual) has commenced teaching operations. Several European universities are involved in the pilot project, including FH Joanneum in Austria, which acts as the coordinating entity. The aim of the new degree program is to elevate the advantages of dual education – the close integration of theory and corporate practice – to a European level. Students complete parts of their studies at various locations within the university alliance while simultaneously working at partner companies that also operate across borders. In doing so, the consortium is responding to the increasing demand for skilled professionals who possess both academic expertise and international work experience.

The background of this initiative is the European Commission's strategy to create a European Education Area. EU4Dual is one of several "European Universities" supported by EU funding to maximize the mobility of students and teachers. In contrast to classic Erasmus programs, the dual model is the central pillar here: the curricula are designed so that the practical phases in the companies are an integral part of academic progress. For the participating universities, this means a high need for coordination regarding accreditations and examination regulations, as the degrees must find full recognition in all participating countries.

    Cross-border Qualification for Management

For those interested in postgraduate management education, such as MBA candidates, this launch marks a significant development in the education market. While classic MBA programs often focus on generalist leadership training, the EU4Dual model focuses on the specific application of knowledge in a multinational context. Students do not remain on one campus but rotate between the locations of the partner universities in countries such as Spain, Poland, France, or Germany. This structure simulates the reality of modern management careers in globally operating corporations, where mobility and intercultural competence are prerequisites.

The significance for the MBA and Master's market in the DACH region should not be underestimated. For a long time, dual studies were considered a specialty of the German-speaking world, which was often difficult to compare internationally. Through institutionalization at the EU level, this model gains prestige and competitiveness compared to Anglo-Saxon Master's programs. Experts observe that companies are increasingly willing to cover tuition fees and living costs for such programs, as they can thus bind high potentials to themselves at an early stage and specifically qualify them for international leadership duties.
